But it is a queer thing, is it not? How many royals there are. I should think it strange, as most royals are quite useless at any task that does not involve ruling.

It does feel like there could end up with a few too many cooks around here. I'd say they woke up the important folks first, maybe to calm their citizens in their turn, but that wouldn't explain me at all.

Well. Perhaps they woke you for the sake of some other lovely quality. Or perhaps there is no order at all, in this place, and it is mere luck.

[priorly]

I suppose we are supposed to be the lucky ones. Forging a brave new world.

[He sounds more uncertain than the smile he tries allows.]

You do not feel so?

[A pause.]

I think to be alone here must be the most difficult of challenges.

[priorly]

[To be alone anywhere is. Ain't that the truth.]

I wouldn't want to go back in one of those little pods, don't misunderstand me. [He's aware it's a risk: out of everyone here he seems to be the only one not properly fixed. But they'd have to fight him, tooth and nail.] But sometimes I do think it might've been easier to sleep through all this settling in. I'm not really a prepare ye the way sort of person - or I never thought I was.

[illuminescent]

We can surprise ourselves, I think.

[She looks at him for a moment.]

You might be that sort of person. You certainly are a kind person, and that means a great deal to me.

[priorly]

[He raises his eyebrows, not displeased with the description but:] I don't think I've ever been judged to be kind so quickly and for so little cause.

[illuminescent]

Well, an unkindly person might choose to mock me for my mistakes.

Or a person who had no inclination might simply tell me no, I was wrong, and send me along my way.

[priorly]

You're right, if I was going to mock you it'd be over something far more interesting than a wrong number. Please, you're the most interesting call I've had all day.

[illuminescent]

Then I shall have to call you more often.

You'll have to ask Byerly my number, I have no idea what you called.

I do hope Byerly did not trick me. Although I do not think that he would.

[priorly]

I don't think he would either. [It would be cruel to trick someone with seemingly so little guile, and more than that, barely a challenge. Why would anybody.] That's the thing about wires, they get crossed.

[illuminescent]

I do not know what that means, but yes, I suspect you are right on that!

[priorly]
