[ a sigh, heavy, the first voluntary if small sign of the exhaustion he's learned for the most part to ignore until it drags him under for short staggered bouts of sleep. ]
The guard's all over the place, just like we are. Can't imagine they enjoy being in enemy territory much. And it looks like there were people from the group that did this planted in the Guard, the Institute and the Sanctuary, so knowing who to trust near the patients is a nightmare.
Long story short, we've got individuals willing to help, but there's no organised effort. And things are going about as well as you'd expect.
The institute? Ah, our friends with the blood. Do you know, if it weren't for the evacuation, and the jungle and a variety of people here I wouldn't dream of dreaming up, I'd think this something my subconscious dredged up. It's all rather pointed. Then every day I hear something worse and chastise myself for imagining it could be directed at me.
[He sniffs.]
If there was something I needed, urgently, you'd come?
[ and John, run off his feet as he is, sounds genuinely flatly baffled for a moment. what difference does that make?
oh. ]
Prior, I'm not going to just fuck off for the fun of it.
[ or for the actually getting more than half an hour's kip in a block of it, whatever. but it's laughed out, a heavy gust of toneless air as a prelude. christ sakes, who's supposed to be the patient here? ]
[ you can't see this, buddy, but he's rubbing his face. silence on his end for a moment as he seeks wisdom from the fingertips massaging his eye sockets... ]
Come over. I'll make cocoa. One night's sleep's a fair trade for two more days before your hands start shaking, surely. And you'll still be visiting the sick, if not presently imperiled.
[ oh, but there's something else that might come as relevant information, ]
For what it's worth, I think we've mostly curbed the spread of the infection. I wouldn't necessarily recommend visiting any unwell friends just yet, but it's— safe. Out there. As it's going to get for now, anyway.
[It's a way from being sure, but even thinking it makes a difference. Not to whether he'll go out - he hasn't become a hermit - but to being just a little less afraid.]
Yeah. It's good news across the board. The Institute came out with a few medicines for curbing certain symptoms back in Olympia - including contagion. The effects of that one seem to be lasting.
Well thank god. I can't say I trust all the herbal cures people are talking about. Mix this flower with that leaf - it's like waiting for the village wise woman to cure cancer.

[ there are enough healers about now and enough chaos and waiting that it won't make much of a difference to the effort here. ]

[He's barely trying to be subtle but there's a small effort, at least.]

That would be good news - not just for me.
