The day we fell to Earth someone told me war was coming. Persuasive as he is, I had been trying not to believe him. So much for that.

And here I thought the sanctuary was the antithesis of everything your logical little heart holds dear.

War's always coming, somewhere or other, just most of the time there's water in the way of the worst of it. Looks like we drew the short straw.

Unfortunately for my logical little heart, that's where the patients are.

I have no idea what a man like me does in wartime. We're banned from fighting, you know. Our limp wrists can't manage a gun.

Flu symptoms, from what I'm told. Seems an awful effort simply to distribute the post nasal drip.

—Sorry, that was... Wasn't expecting to wake up to a casual burst of biological warfare this afternoon. Make sure to steer clear of anyone with symptoms, yeah? Safest place is most likely the station if things get too bad down here.

Well, that's the answer to what I do, isn't it? Stay out of the way. Hide. I just don't know if I'll be much better at that than fighting.

Is it even contagious? Do people know?

It sounds like it is, yes, according to reports. And for now I think the best thing any of us can do is stay out of the way.

Like you will be, right in the middle of a ward full of sick people?

I know. Your job, your immune system, yadda, yadda. I'm glad there are so many people to help. Just... I can't sit here and do nothing. I'm no good at it: inactivity. Stillness. I find it terrifying, like some sort of premonition. So I keep moving and hope that way it can't keep up.

[ there's some relative quiet on John's end. the sounds of movement: collecting a jacket, putting things into a bag.

he's not good at this sort of thing, especially not right now. so his response is less than direct. ]
